“Digging” by Seamus Heaney is the inspiration for these “Digging Triptych” brooches. A poem of the remembrance of Heaney’s father and grandfathers’ skill and work ethic in the bogs of Northern Ireland. Digging turf and planting potatoes. Heaney compares the toil with his own digging and labour of the pen. Comparing the rhythm and the craft and honing of skills.

In reference to “Toners Bog”, the copper hollow forms are dark in tone and placed in the centre of one is a piece’s Irish bog oak. The poem is etched (dug) into the entirety of all the brooches. Enamel panels with images of turf drying and the poem take the centre of the remaining triptych pieces.
