The inspiration for this series of jewels by Sita Falkena is driftwood, washed ashore on the beach by wind, waves, and tides. The wood comes from remains of sunken ships, lost cargo, or trees carried out to sea, further broken down by the powerful ocean. Salty waters, high waves, strong winds and blazing sun, have polished these pieces of wood until light and fragile fragments remain. These delicate, soft-textured fragments of driftwood, found along the shorelines, oftentimes tangled in debris and fishing gear, were mimicked in Balsa tree wood and shaped into brooches.
