On August 23 at 7 p.m., it has been exactly 35 years since the bells rang on the radio and about 2 million people living in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia stopped to join the live 620-km-long chain called the Baltic Road and the song “Bunda jau Baltija” (tr. “Baltics are awakening”) was played. People gathered to demonstrate unity and determination to seek freedom and independence to the Soviet authorities and the nations of the world. A year later, by the will of the Lithuanian people and by natural right, on March 11, 1990, The Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania announced the restoration of Lithuania's Independence.
