Over time, blowing out birthday candles has held different meanings and symbolism across various dates and cultures. It is believed that the ritual began in Ancient Rome, associated with Artemis, the Greek goddess of the Moon. The symbolism evolved over time. The lit candles came to represent inner light and personal growth, as well as the counting and celebration of the years lived. With the Congratulations necklace, the artist aims to reference this universal concept of celebration.
